Ultra-compact and fast atomic force microscopy (AFM)

Ultra-compact and fast atomic force microscopy (AFM)
Self-sensing cantilevers without the need for lasers that are completely
free of laser calibration burden enable a completely new generation of
compact and fast atomic force microscopy (AFM). nano3DSense provides
powerful and dedicated force sensing capabilities and highest possible
adaptivity, even under difficult conditions on cantilever and measuring
environment. Compared to conventional optical or piezoresistive AFM
cantilever, the new self-sensing cantilevers have a great benefit in
material freedom: In this context, the cantilever material does not matter
anymore and can be chosen flexibly directly addressing the real problem
(e.g. biological samples). In addition to silicon (Si) many other
cantilever materials, such as SiN, SU8 and other polymers, steel and much
more are available for excellent AFM imaging in industry and research.
Whether in life science or biotechnology in living environment, e.g. in
microbiology, cell analytics and force spectroscopy: Convince yourself of
the various application possibilities and a new standard in research
   flexibility.

   CEO Greetings

                                 CEO Greetings

                             Dear business partners

Dr. Alexander Kaya, General Manager & Founder

The so-called “top-down” approach has dominated the microsystem and
semiconductor technology as it is used today in the manufacturing of micro
electronic devices for medical applications for more than five decades.
The demand for higher throughputs for cost-effective quantities has been
continuously increasing and has decisively changed our life.

With an extensive drawback for the coming years: More than 250 complex
dull and error-prone silicon processing steps in cleanroom are required
today – from idea to finished product – to provide high level micro
components, such as medical, biological or chemical sensors, in ensured
quality and quantity. Unfortunately achieving higher levels of
miniaturization and biocompatibility – vital for many new medical
applications – has become a task that either requires great technological
efforts or cannot be provided properly anymore using traditional
   microsystem technology.

Our customers demand flexible manufacturing systems which quickly and easily
adapt to challenging requirements in R&D, rapid prototyping and series
production as well.

NanoScale Systems (Nanoss) GmbH uses a radically innovative approach,
called nano3DSense, to meet these new challenges with unmatched
performance and adaptivity: With 3D Nanoprinting we venture the next step
into miniaturization: once again we shift the traditional boundaries of
microsystem technology in terms of accuracy and adaptivity in a previously
unknown manner. We also say good-bye to classic dull silicon, which is
commonly considered to be today’s main bottleneck, when designing new
   exciting medical sensor ideas.

nano3DSense is a revolutionary patented 3D manufacturing platform, which
allows to completely bypass expensive and time consuming cleanroom
procedures, such as mask and silicon techniques. With nano3DSense
technology, a dedicated single processing step, the innovating 3D
Nanoprinting method, is invented, which easily and flexibly lets you
design, prototype or produce your sensors: with unsurpassed accuracy,
   fast, and cost-efficient.

The new 3D Nanoprinting with nano3DSense can be used e.g. for highly
customizable and yet powerful sensors and sets a new benchmark for today’s
measuring technology in medicine: For the first time, pressure, force and
strain sensors can be directly printed on a great variety of biocompatible
or other tailored materials to measure undistorted physical, chemical or
biological quantities. We guarantee true nanometer precision for our
   sensors.

An example is the development of new biocompatible medical sensors for
sophisticated blood pressure probes and implants or ultra-compact
catheters with integrated force-feedback for multi-purpose use in the
human body. Another example is the application of new “Point of Care
(POC)” methods in protein based, micro biological or chemical analytics,
such as the label free detection of antibodies, biomarkers or DNA and
other substances in real time or fast and compact atomic force microscopy
(AFM), e.g. for cell analytics, force spectroscopy and other life science
   applications:

When implementing your ideas in the micro and nano world, we all jointly
   enter into new territory.

Please feel free to contact me for our help and support.

Biosensors for Unparalleled Point of Care (POC) Diagnostics

Biosensors for Unparalleled Point of Care (POC) Diagnostics

Serious Disadvantages of Today’s Standard ELISA

The ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay) immunoassay has been the
gold standard method for the diagnosis of disease-specific and other
proteins or biomarkers for more than 4 decades. However as the method is a
label-based test system that needs fluorescence or other markers, it is
often associated with long waiting times and complex microscopic
evaluations. In certain cases (e.g. emergency medicine or intensive care),
these disadvantages can represent a serious problem for the quick therapy
of the patients symptoms and recovery. At the same time, the labeling
itself presents a high time and cost effort and burdens considerably high
analyte requirements, e.g. blood samples and other resources.

   IgG

   Human immunoglobulin (IgG)

  Label-Free Immunoassays with nano3DSense Biosensors

   Micro- and nano-fabricated cantilever biosensors (so-called MEMS/NEMS
cantilevers) with nano3DSense use a completely new and advantageous way to
detect antibodies and other proteins in the best possible way: label-free
   and ultra-fast.

The reliable lock-and-key principle ensures both significantly improved
sensitivity and specificity with unrivaled results not achieved by today’s
standard tests. Combined with very low analyte requirements in the order
of only a few microliters per test the new nano3DSense based assay is the
ideal platform for “Point of Care (POC)” diagnostics and analytics.

ELISA has been the gold standard for immunoassay for more than 4 decades.
However it is label based and not convenient for fast and easy "Point of Care
                                (POC)" diagnosis

nano3DSense : Getting quick test results within minutes after the key reaction
                                    starts…

nano3DSense is a radically new approach to label-free immunoassays:

How it works: Micromechanical beams (cantilevers) that are
surface-functionalized are highly specific and sensitive to the target analyte.
The nano3DSense-Technology allows to detect precisely and instantaneously any
mechanical movement of the cantilever caused by molecular interactions between
the target and the surface. Antibodies and other biomarkers can be detected and
quantified in real time with highest possible accuracy.

The nano3DSense sensor at the edge of the cantilevers (a few micons in size
only) is able to detect mechanical forces in the piconewton (pN) regime.

Molecular interactions between target analyte and the functionalized surface can
be measured with nano3DSense with ultra-high precision and in real-time.

Lab on a chip: nano3DSense is the ideal platform for "Point of Care (POC)"
diagnosis (Top view of the entire detector)

  Advantage through Simplicity and Speed

nano3DSense offers decisive advantages for point of care diagnostic tests
whether in medical care, industry or R&D: using multiplex arrays, a large
number of analytes, such as antibodies, proteins, DNA or RNA can be
simultaneously processed at high speed on a single microchip. With high
   throughput, cost-effective, and resource-efficiently.

Advantages of the nano3DSense diagnosis platform at a glance:

     • Label-free analysis and immunoassays of bio molecules and
micro-organisms, such as antibodies and antigens, disease biomarkers
and other proteins, DNA and RNA, pathogens (virus, bacteria, spores
and fungi) and cells, suitable for manifold “Point of Care (POC)”
       applications
     • Real-time test results within minutes
     • Unparalleled sensitivity and specificity through micromechanical and
       lock-and-key measurement principle
     • Highly scalable setup through MEMS based multiplex arrays for high
       throughput on a single microchip
     • Resource-saving test setup with low sample requirements (µl,
       microliters per test)

And Various Applications in “Point of Care (POC)” analytics and diagostics:

          • Rapid detection of multi-resistant bacteria („superbugs“) (MRSA,
            VRE, E. Coli)
          • No time-consuming PCR-amplification (Polymerase Chain Reaction)
or bacterial replication (petri dish) required

     • Serology of infectious diseases (immunoassays for e.g. HIV, hepatitis,
       ebola, measles, rubella)
     • Inline- and online bioprocess analysis in the industrial production
lines of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) (upstream/downstream)

We closely collaborate with developers and manufacturers in the
pharmaceutical and chemical industry to meet new challenges.

   Tailored Sensors for MEMS/NEMS

                         Tailored Sensors for MEMS/NEMS

Through 3D Nanoprinting nano3DSense Seamlessly Adapts to Your Measuring
  Environment!

MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems) transform mechanical into electrical
energy MEMS-3DForceand vice-versa. They normally consist of a small
bendable mechanical substrate, such as a pressure diaphragm or force
substrate (e.g. cantilever) and a transducer for specific measurements.
The challenges on the measuring technology increase significantly with
progressing miniaturization and the conditions on the substrate material.
If such devices are miniaturized to the nanometer level of several hundred
nanometers (nm) only, they are referred to as extremely compact NEMS
   (NanoElectroMechanical Systems).

The Limits of Conventional Metrology in Industry and Research

Conventional devices for force, pressure or strain measurements, such as
lasers, piezo resistors, or capacity sensors, quickly reach their limits
in the case of highly miniaturized MEMS/NEMS applications, often already
at dimensions below 20 microns (µm) (1 µm = 1000 nanometers).

In case of methods that use a focused laser spot e.g., the diffraction
limit of the laser, which cannot become smaller than 1.4 µm (HWFM, “Half
Width at the Full Maximum”), already represents a natural and ultimate
barrier for further miniaturization of optical probes.

The situation is similar for other force sensors, such as piezo resistors.
As they require sophisticated cleanroom and doping processes, the
miniaturization potential is often already exhausted at dimensions of
20–50 µm. Furthermore, these traditional sensor approaches strictly
require silicon as a base material, which is not desirable in certain
cases. In case of other materials, such as steel or polymers, force and
pressure can only be measured if complicated detours e.g. gluing and
joining techniques or oil filled chambers are employed.

These cumbersome and error-prone processing steps in mainstream cleanroom
technology can be greatly eliminated with the new patented nano3DSense^TM
technology: Thanks to the innovative 3D nanoprinting, high-performance
sensors can be directly applied with nanometer precision on all materials
and are immediately ready for use in your MEMS/NEMS application.

Printable Sensors for MEMS/NEMS on the True Nanoscale

With nano3DSense^TM, sensors are printed for the first time using 3D
printing with true nanometer precision onto desired locations, where they
are immediately available for powerful measuring tasks. And this
independently from material substrates or the nature of the surface. All
materials made of e.g. silicon, oxides, plastic, polymers, steel,
   ceramics, and more are suitable.

nano3DSense^TM adapts seamlessly and in the best possible way to every
MEMS/NEMS environment and offers a positioning accuracy on the substrate
of less than 5 nanometers for sensor dimensions down to 10 nanometers (if
needed). This is a world record! The sensor is accurately applied exactly
at the point, where forces, pressure and other measuring variables
actually occur or must be measured very precisely. Unlike in the case of
e.g. piezo resistors or strain gauges, no interfering intermediate layers
or complex bonding or joining technologies are required anymore.

3D printing on the nanoscale also allows adapting to the geometrical
boundary conditions of the MEMS/NEMS component quickly. The sensor is
simply printed three-dimensionally (3D) onto the MEMS/NEMS surface (see
example graphics above and below) and are there immediately available for
your measuring tasks – bypassing sophisticated cleanroom and mask
   processes.

Whether for highly custimzed production, rapid prototyping or R&D during
the new development of demanding MEMS/NEMS applications, or for fast
testing of a new sensor design: 3D nano printing will always provide you
with an advantage of time, costs and flexibility when implementing your
   ideas.

Unparalleled Advantage in Miniaturization and Adaptivity

nano3DSense^TM is a cross-technology platform for industry and R&D, and
covers a variety of dedicated tasks with sensor background. If you have
highest demands on miniaturization and adaptivity to the measuring
environment or the material, newly exploit the entire spectrum of force
and pressure sensors for your MEMS/NEMS applications, such as

     • Force and pressure sensors for medical devices, such as catheters,
       implants, and prostheses
     • Analytics: detection of antibodies, proteins, DNA, viruses/bacteria,
and cell analyses, as well as force spectroscopy
     • Medical diagnostics: early diagnosis of diseases, such as diabetes and
       tumors
     • Gas measuring technology, e.g. for hazardous gases and explosives in
       personal protection
     • Compact and fast atomic force microscopy (AFM) without laser optical
       devices
     • Pressure sensors for vacuum pressure and laboratory technology (gas
       flow/mixing systems/leak detectors, etc.)
     • Force, pressure, acceleration, torque, and vibration sensors in the
robotics, automotive, entertainment electronics, and aerospace
industry as well as many other micromechanical tasks

We closely collaborate with developers and manufacturers of MEMS/NEMS and
general sensors to meet these new challenges.

                    Tailored Customer Solutions in Medicine

Advantage by design: We Are the Expert in Unusual Requirements

We provide advice for everyday and not so everyday questions aboReinraum
Elektronikut all aspects of sensors in medical technology and life
sciences. The patented nano3DSense technology offers the flexibility of
individually and cost-consciously addressing even “exotic” customer
requirements. In the case of measuring tasks with difficult boundary
conditions for the material (e.g. biocompatibility) or highly miniaturized
tasks for minimally invasive solutions which cannot be solved
conventionally or only with great effort, unusual solutions can almost
never be avoided. The mainstream microsystem or cleanroom technology is
optimized for high scale production requirements mainly. However, it
reacts slowly and most inflexible to individual questions with complex
boundary conditions. For this reason, dedicated production and R&D
technologies, such as nano3DSense, which can be profitably and effectively
used for rapid prototyping as well as in manufacturing, become
   increasingly important.

Medical Sensors for Implants and Catheters

Medical Sensors for Implants and Catheters

Precision on the Nanometer Scale: Unbeatably Small and Flexible in Medical
  Technology

Medical technology today cannot be imaged anymore without the use of force
and pressure sensors. Miniaturization and biocompatible materials are
particularly important if minimum invasive intervention and maximum
tolerance to the human body is of highest priority, e.g. in the case of
catheters and long-term implants. To enable the best-possible therapy for
the patient, highest requirements are placed on gentle as well as
tissue-compatible medical equipment. The requirements on reliability,
precision, durability and a balanced price-performance ratio have
continuously increased during recent years, and will further increase.

Implants for monitoring of cardiac blood pressure or glucose (CGM)

                              materials or shapes

Pressure Diaphragm for Your Medical Applications

Every pressure measurement in the body is based on the diaphragm (or
membrane), e.g. for short or long-term intravascular, intracardiac or
neurovascular blood pressure measurements. Its minimum size and material
consistency mainly determine the actual benefit and application
possibilities, e.g. as diagnostic implants or catheters in the treatment
of hypertension, heart failure and minimally invasive surgery. Pressure
diaphragms also play an improtant role in the monitoring of many other
body organs, such as implants for intraocular pressure (IOP) for the
diagnosis of glaucoma, intracranial pressure, bladder pressure, stomach
pressure and even in the case of glucose monitoring (CGM).

   Enabling-Technology-für-Drucksensoren-in-der-Medizintechnik-03

The pressure measurement in the body is based on the membrane

Nanoss GmbH has invented the groundbreaking nano3DSense-technology
platform which – compared to traditional capacitive, piezoresistive or
optical fiber (Fabry-Perot) methods – provides significant benefits in the
sensor design: A higher form factor of at least 10x in minimally
invasivity can be achieved, when compared with conventional pressure or
force sensors. The new approach with patented 3D Nanoprinting also allows
to print sensors directly on your medical device (e.g. catheter or
implant) thus simplifies your sensor design radically. As a result
biocompatibility and minimally invasiveness can be chosen with nearly
unlimited flexibility and the effort for your measurement setup (sensor
and readout) can be reduced to the absolute minimum requirements.

For pressure and force measurements in the human body nano3DSense allows to
select the membrane material individually according to the respective
                                  application.

Titanium e.g. is a highly biocompatible material and first choice for long-term
implants in the case of blood pressure measurements on the heart.

Simulation of the pressure membrane under strain

Outperform your expectations: Benefits for Your Applications in Industry and
  Research (R&D)

We closely collaborate with medical equipment developers and manufacturers
to meet todays and tomorrows challenges with highest possible priority.
The ultra-compact sensors of Nanoss GmbH set new standards with respect to
minimally invasiveness, biocompatibility, flexibility and greatest
possible care for force and pressure measurement catheters and implants in
   medical applications:

     • Enabling technology for challenging tasks in new sensors design, e.g.
       for

          • Implants and catheters for intravascular, intracardiac or
neurovascular blood pressure or force feedback
          • Pressure in other body organs: implants for intraocular pressure
(IOP), intracranial pressure, bladder pressure, stomach pressure
          • True 3D force sensors directly adaptable on biocompatible
implants, cathters and other medical devices
          • Implants for blood sugar sensors for continuous glucose
            monitoring (CGM)

     • Minimally invasive dimensions of the transducer (e.g. pressure
diaphragm), down to a diameter of < 100 µm
     • Advantageous use of versatile transducer materials, such as
biocompatible steel, polymers or ceramics, e.g. for long-term
       implantable pressure sensors or catheters
     • Thanks to the flexible 3D printing method, medical devices can be
easily equipped with high-performance sensor functionality even under
difficult boundry conditions, e.g. for highly sophisticated 3D force
       sensors on complicated transducers
     • Best linearity behavior, low power consumption and long-term stability
       for high-precision measurements

nano3DSense: The First 3D Printer with True Nanometer Precision

nano3DSense: The First 3D Printer with True Nanometer Precision

How does 3D Nanoprinting for Sensors Work?

More than 250 complex processing steps in cleanroom technology – from CAD
design to the finished product – are eliminated without compromises:
Consequently turning away from traditional semiconductor and silicon
processing technologies (such as lithography masks, resists, and
cleanrooms), nano3DSense allows us to bypass multiple complex and
expensive production steps for microelectronic components such as sensors
and to revolutionize the entire production process.

For the first time, our micro components are directly printed
three-dimensionally (3D) with true nanometer precision on a
customer-specific substrate and are there immediately operational e.g. for
sophisticated force or pressure measurements. In contrast to the
traditionally known lithography, thanks to 3D Nanoprinting, the achieved
results can also be used to drastically improve and simplify the sensor
design, which otherwise would require an elaborate measurement setup.

Rapid Prototyping: The sensor can be applied with highest possible precision on
all surfaces or materials without any prior preparations.

Free selection of sensor geometry and size: it takes only seconds

nano3DSense is a maskless lithography process that does neither require a
cleanroom nor silicon, thus giving unparalleled flexibility and precision for
                                your application

                   3D-Printing with True Nanometer-Precision

nano3DSense ist fully automatable and can be used for fast batch production even
                                on wafer level.

Nanometer Precision for Production and Rapid Prototyping

3D Nanoprinting is used in modern scanning electron microscopes (SEM) that
are fully adapted to nano3DSense . There, a highly focused electron beam
with a diameter of a few nanometers only is available in high vacuum for
3D printing. This beam is used as an ultra-tiny  “pen” for the
layer-by-layer production process of sensors. We achieve unbeatable small
dimensions, which allow sensor sizes below 10 nanometers if required. And
this on almost all material surfaces or geometrical shapes (see video
   above).

The groundbreaking flexibility of our method allows e.g. the provision of
quickly adjustable production series or the fast implementation
of tailored rapid prototyping requests in R&D for our customers in a
   cost-effective and unrivaled manner.

How the new nano3DSense Sensor Works

How the new nano3DSense Sensor Works

A New Leaf: Radically New Measuring Principle for Medical Sensors

For the first time, a radically new sensor principle for visionary medical
applications is used for the nano3DSense: Nano crystalline composite
materials, so-called nanocomposites, are the ideal basis for elaborate
measuring tasks of mechanical parameters (pressure, force etc.): With
highest possible accuracy and reliability on the micro- and nanoscale.

nano3DSense – Sensors Designed from Scratch for Highest Possible Accuracy

A MEMS fabricated micro substrate, such as the pressure diaphragm or a
micro force transducer (e.g. beam or cantilever) on a chip (see graphic
below) can be mechanically bent or stretched in many different ways: e.g.
by applying pressure or a tiny force on the surface of the substrate. A
diverse and complex distribution of forces on different locations on the
   substrate can occur.

Thanks to nano3DSense, these forces can now be measured with highest
possible precision where they actually originate from. 3D printing on the
true nanoscale allows to place the sensors on the substrate
where perturbations exactly stem from. With nanometer precision
everywhere on the substrate, applicable for almost all materials dedicated
for medical purposes. A revolutionary simple measuring principle
guarantees easy and flexible design & implementation of the sensor into
your medical application using standard measurement technology.

                         nano3DSense Sensor Principle:

Forces on the transducer (MEMS based beams (cantilevers)) can be measured
exactly where they originate from (here: centre of bending edge)

                               Deflection curve:

The high resolution output signal during bending of the nano3DSense sensor
can be measured easily using standard electronics.

                   Current-Voltage (I/U)-Curve of nano3DSense

sensor perfectly meets even highest linearity requirements

                          nano3DSense Reproducibility

(I/U)-Curves of four identically fabricated nano3DSense sensors

                          nano3DSense Signal Stability

Output Signal Stability (Resistance) over time

  Sensors that Make a Difference

On the basis of the adaptive 3D nanoprinting approach, the substrate (e.g.
pressure or force transducer) material or shape can be chosen freely
without any limitations in design or material properties, allowing for
unparalleled flexibility and custom-tailored solutions for your medical
application. Besides silicon, many other materials  e.g. steel (such as
biocompatible titanium), glass, oxydes, plastic or polymers, such as
polymide can be used effortlessly for elaborate measuring tasks. Even tiny
substrates in the range of 100 µm (Mircrons) and below for the minimally
invasive use of catheters or medical implants can be equipped easily with
   high-performance sensors.

Thanks to the small size, used for the nano3DSense sensor, ultra-low power
consumption and efficiency is warranted. This way the sensor quickly and
individually adapts to your medical application and is ready for use in
   every possible measuring encounter.

   Rapid Prototyping

                               Rapid Prototyping

  Bypassing Historical Hurdles

nano3DSense offers unique rapid prototyping capabilities for electronic
circuits and all kinds of MEMS/NEMS applications. In particular, if a new
sensor idea must be quickly implemented, conventional cleanroom
technologies, such as mask lithography, have significant disadvantages.
E.g. due to long delays of several weeks and significant additional costs:
Every time, the sensor design is changed – even slightly, for optimization
purposes, new masks must be produced and the whole time consuming cycle of
“top down” steps, such as UV exposure and lift-off, must be entered again.
Several such iterations are often required up to series production
maturity of a new product idea.

Using nano3DSense as a powerful rapid prototyping tool, you print your
sensors, electronic circuits or mechanical actuators simply and ready for
operating onto your product or the desired substrate bypassing these
   annoying intermediate steps.

Reaching the Goal in Only Four Steps

In combination with focused ion beam (FIB) cutting, you are even
completely independent from the final circuit layout. The electronic
wiring of the sensors on the integrated chip can also “on the fly”
modified to your needs using a focused ion beam so that you do not have to
decide on a final design upfront.

The figure illustrates the rapid prototyping process using nano3DSense and
   FIB cutting in four steps:

    1. The figure shows the example of a micro chip with pre-structured gold
       contacts.
    2. Using FIB cutting, a dedicated layout should be provided for the
conductors in the center of the gold contacts. The gold material is
removed within seconds with nanometer precision using the focused ion
beam, until the desired layout is exposed.
    3. In the next step, the sensor design is defined in the center of the
exposed conductor using a CAD program.
    4. nano3DSense now assumes control by printing a force-sensing nano
material directly onto the desired location, within a minute.

Ultra-Small Force Sensors for Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)

Ultra-Small Force Sensors for Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)

How to Achieve Ultrafast and Compact Atomic Force Microscopy?

   AFM-Cantilever

   (courtesy: FP7-Project ALBICAN / FALCON)

The imaging speed of atomic force microscopy (AFM) normally increases with
the resonance frequency of the cantilever. The resonance frequency can be
purposefully influenced e.g. with smaller cantilever and the selection of
suitable materials. Furthermore, the overall signal-to-noise ratio and
   image quality are significantly improved.

Using self-sensing cantilevers with nano3DSense, another speed improvement
can be achieved, which is immediately noticeable in the performance: With
the integration of the sensing unit on the cantilever, no complicated
laser optics is required anymore to operate the AFM. Instead of having to
move the inert sample stage, the more dynamic measuring head must be
traveled across the sample only. This fundamentally simplifies the AFM
architecture, which can be newly arranged in a space-saving manner. In
addition to the reduced equipment size, the annoying calibration effort of
optical AFMs is omitted as well.

In the cases, where traditional methods such as piezoresistors or laser
optics fail, self-sensing cantilevers for AFM, based on nano3DSense
technology, are the safe alternative: whether advantageously during
space-saving AFM integration into microscopic instruments, such as
scanning electronic microscopes (SEM), for power-consuming analyses of
biological samples with video rates in R&D, in high-resolution force
microscopy, e.g. on cells or molecules, or for fast wafer and mask
   inspection in semiconductor industry.

Pioneering Work for Industry and Research Using Self-Sensing Cantilevers with
  nano3DSense

nano3DSense provides powerful and dedicated force sensing capabilities,
even under difficult conditions on cantilever and measuring environment.
If needed, ultra-compact AFM cantilevers with unrivaled small dimensions
of less than 1 micron (µm) can be equipped with integrated force sensors
   as full bridge.

Compared to conventional piezoresistive AFM cantilever, the new
self-sensing cantilever for AFM with nano3DSense have a great benefit in
material freedom: In this context, the cantilever material does not matter
anymore and can be chosen flexibly according to the real requirements. In
addition to silicon (Si), SiN, SU8, steel, and many other materials are
available to flexibly find the proper customized solution for every
application purpose in industry and research. Using nano3DSense, the
cantilever, core of every AFM, perfectly adapts to the measuring
environment – and not the other way around!

Convince yourself of the many advantages of the new AFM platform that
gives you the ultimate flexibility for your AFM probes.

The Benefit of Optical and Laser free Instruments

Using the self-sensing cantilevers for atomic force microscopy (AFM), we
e.g. replace the tricky laser-optical components of AFM with a small
sensing unit, which is practically integrated on the cantilever. This
decisively simplifies the architecture of AFM and other instruments with
laser optics, as compacter devices are possible and there is no need for
   laser calibration anymore.

The integration of AFM into instruments such as scanning electron
microscopes (SEM) or optical microscopes is significantly simplified with
the optics-free architecture. Furthermore, many additional AFM
applications, e.g. in cell analytics and force spectroscopy, can be
   advantageously realized without laser optics.

Nanoss GmbH has pioneered in this field to offer optimum solutions even
under extreme requirements on the sample environment.

     • Early diagnosis of diseases-specific biomarkers, e.g.:

          • Type 2 Diabetes (e.g. Proinsulin, Glucose, Adiponectin, HbA1c)

          • Cardiovascular diseases, e.g. Acute Myocardial Infarction, AMI
(e.g. Myoglobin, Troponin, Creatin Kinase and C-reactive Protein
CRP) or Heart Failure (e.g. BNP (B-Typ Natriuretisches Peptid
            oder Brain Natriuretic Peptide))

     • Molecular diagnostics:

          • Hybridization analysis of ssDNA, RNA, aptamers and
            oligonucleotides

            Polymorphisms (SNPs)
          • Rapid detection of multi-resistant bacteria („superbugs“) (MRSA,
            VRE, E. Coli)
          • No time-consuming PCR-amplification (Polymerase Chain Reaction)
or bacterial replication (petri dish) required

     • Serology of infectious diseases (immunoassays for e.g. HIV, hepatitis,
       ebola, measles, rubella)
     • Inline- and online bioprocess analysis in the industrial production
lines of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) (upstream/downstream)

   Top-Down vs. Bottom-Up

                             Top-Down vs. Bottom-Up

Revolutionary 3D Nanoprinting for ultra-precision and adaptive sensor
  manufacturing

nano3DSense is a new generative (“bottom-up”) manufacturing technology,
which enables seamless 3D printing on the true nanoscale of
microelectronic components, such as force, pressure and strain sensors,
onto customer-specific material substrates. In contrast to the classical
semiconductor approaches used in cleanrooms (“top-down”), with maskless
nano3DSense no error-prone multi-step lithography technologies or costly
   cleanroom processes are needed anymore.

lithography and other silicon processing technologies. This way, we can
not only eliminate more than 250 complex multi-step processes in the
manufacturing of sensors and simplify the production effort. Using unique
rapid prototyping capabilities, provided by nano3DSense, the complete
cycle in the development of new product generations can be incredibly
customized and accelerated as well. This guarantees tailored solutions and
maximum profit for your application even in the case of small series
   production.

Medical Sensors for Implants and Catheters

Medical Sensors for Implants and Catheters

Precision on the Nanometer Scale: Unbeatably Small and Flexible in Medical
  Technology

Medical technology today cannot be imaged anymore without the use of force
and pressure sensors. Miniaturization and biocompatible materials are
particularly important if minimum invasive intervention and maximum
tolerance to the human body is of highest priority, e.g. in the case of
catheters and long-term implants. To enable the best-possible therapy for
the patient, highest requirements are placed on gentle as well as
tissue-compatible medical equipment. The requirements on reliability,
precision, durability and a balanced price-performance ratio have
continuously increased during recent years, and will further increase.

                              materials or shapes

   FAQ

                                      FAQ

    ↓ What is nano3DSense?

nano3DSense is a patented maskless lithography process with nanometer
precision for the 3D printing of novel sensor-active nanomaterials on
custom-tailored substrates (tranducers or microchips). The novel
sensor-active nanomaterials allow for advanced measurements of a broad
range of values, such as force, pressure or displacement by a simple
electronic readout on a micro chip.

   Circuit

Image: sensor-active nanomaterials (nano3DSense) printed on a substrate
   containing metallic electrodes.

In contrast to conventional top-down methods, which require complexe
   cleanroom-technology, nano3DSense is a single-step lithography process,
that can be beneficially used for easy and fast manufacturing of 2D and 3D
   sensors.

As nano3DSense does not require silicon processing technologies (such as
photo masks, exposure, wet chemistry, etc.), more than 250 cleanroom steps
can be avoided. nano3DSense is best suitable for adaptive series
production, rapid prototyping and in R&D.

↓ Why did we develop nano3DSense?

Conventional micro sensors (e.g. optical, piezo-electrical,
piezo-resistive, and capacitive methods) reach their physical limits in
many applications with respect to their miniaturization and accuracy
   potential already today.

In the case of optical detection e.g., the diffraction limit of the laser,
which cannot become smaller than 1.4 µm (HWFM, “Half Width at the Full
Maximum”), represents a fundamental barrier for further miniaturization of
   the optical setup.

The situation is very similar for other sensors, such as piezo resistors
or capacitive methods. As they require complicated cleanroom technologies
or silicon doping processes, the miniaturization potential is usually
exhausted at dimensions of 20–50 µm.

Regarding transducer material selection, traditional sensors are mostly
restricted to silicon, and cannot handle more than two dimensions (2D).

With nano3DSense, there are virtually no limits with respect to
miniaturization, accuracy and transducer material selection. If needed,
sensor sizes below 10 nm are achieved by a simple 3D printing procedure.

↓ Why is miniaturization even important?

    1. Miniaturization allows for smaller sensors, which are more suitable
for detecting microscopic objects or quantities. The performance (e.g.
sensitivity and signal quality (signal-noise level)) is also normally
       increased, when sensors become smaller.
    2. For special applications with high data volumes (e.g.
multiplex-arrays, realtime force measurements) the signal processing
speed (or throughput can be increased when sensors are minaturized.

   Nanoworld_Engl

When space is tight and installation restricted (e.g. with respect to
minimally invasiveness), the nano3DSense sensor comes into its own. With
the same measuring range and higher signal performance characteristics,
the nano3DSense transducer is up to hundred times smaller in construction
   than a comparable piezo resistor.

↓ Why is the nano3DSense sensors up to 500 times more sensitive than a
conventional semiconductor sensor, e.g. a piezoresistor?

The sensitivity of nano3DSense can be flexibly tuned to your measuring
requirements simply by geometrical design benefits or proper material
choice. An external force that causes a small displacement on a substrate
(e.g. pressure diaphragm or force-feedback beam (cantilever)) is described
by Stoney’s formula (picture below). The displacement, which is a good
measure for the sensitivity, strongly depends on the Young’s Module E
(material stiffness) and the substrate’s thickness.

By aligning geometry and material stiffness parameters (table below) a
sensitivity that is up to 550 times higher compared to an conventional
semiconductor piezoresistor can be achieved using nano3DSense.
Conventional semiconductor piezoresistors don’t show such benefits since
they require a complicated doping process and silicon as a base material,
which limits the minimum achievable thickness of the substrate (typically
   1-3 µm) .

NanosSense-PerformanceImage and Table: The displacement Δz of a cantilever
beam due to an external force strongly depends on thickness t and the
Young’s Modulus E of the material (Stoney’s formula). With softer and
thinner materials the sensitivity can be drastically increased (table).

↓ Does nano3DSense provides a stable sensor signal? (When compared to other
    sensors, e.g. piezo resistors)

nano3DSense force, pressure and strain sensors are durable high-precision
measurement devices which possess exceptional characteristics for
measurements in the long term or short term, whether for high frequency
dynamic or static measurement events. A nanosensor fabricated with
nano3DSense 3D printing technology is a highly robust nanocomposite
material which normally consists of nanogranular metallic clusters,
randomly embedded in a carbonaceous matrix (like a cermet, a composite
material composed of ceramic (cer) and metallic (met) materials).

  Ideally designed for demanding requirements

The nano3DSense sensor is ideally designed to meet optimal sensor
requirements, such as temperature resistance and hardness, the flexibility
to undergo elastic deformations and very stable electrical
characteristics. Pictures below, for instance, show stability curves which
have superb characteristics in the short time and long-term (degradation
curves). E.g. when operated as a full bridge of four identical nano3DSense
sensors excellent linearity and – thanks to their small sizes – very low
power consumption can be achieved. Additional interference effects such as
temperature variations can be avoided efficiently without any further
   compensation efforts.

  Proven in Harsh, Rugged Environments

The nano3DSense has been designed and proven as a rugged and
high-performance sensor platform in many critical and highly sophisticated
applications, for example in atomic force microscopy (AFM). Pictures below
show AFM image scans taken and rendered with the nano3DSense force sensor
that was fully integrated on a commercial AFM micro cantilever. To perform
in atomic force microscopy an integrated force sensor must withstand great
mechanical and electrical loads. Since the cantilever is operated with
very high mechanical oscillation frequencies (>1 MHz) it must perform many
billions of deflection cycles during a single image scan. The nano3DSense
can be operated effortlessly under these and other harsh environments
(e.g. fluids, high temperature > 500°C) with excellent performance in
terms of durability and short or long-term stability.

↓ Can the nano3DSense Sensor be mass produced?

Yes. nano3DSense is a fully automated batch process which allows
consistent production of hundred thousands of sensor per year with a
single production tool. Our patented 3D nanoprinting process was designed
from scratch to meet highest quality standards, such as reproducibility
   and consistency.

↓ What does platform technology mean and how is nano3DSense integrated into
    my application?

nano3DSense was developed and optimized as a multi-purpose sensor platform
and for numerous applications in force, pressure, strain, and other
   MEMS/NEMS sensors.

Wherever miniaturization and adaptivity to the measuring environment in
industry and R&D are crucial, the advantages of nano3DSense can be used
the most. Thanks to the high adaptivity, even difficult measuring tasks
can be completed as well, which cannot be solved using traditional methods
   or with high effort only.

nano3DSense is a flexible signal transducer between measured variable and
the applications of our customers (see graphic).

With the help of physical interfaces, which we define together with our
customers, we establish a dedicated bridge optimally connecting the
central measuring requirements of the end customer with the applications
(hardware and software) of our customers.
