        Our mission

Our mission.

Experts predict that additive manufacturing is going to revolutionize the
   technology of production.

  The challenge

Experts predict that additive manufacturing is going to revolutionize the
technology of production. Today’s limitations in the manufacture of
components and tools can be overcome by the three-dimensional layered
deposition of material. This process permits maximal freedom of design and
enables the design-driven production of complex functional products.
Printed turbines and control cabinets, dental and function-integrated
implants, generated satellite and aircraft components will all become
reality. This will open up entire new worlds of manufacture – tool-free,
fast and extremely economical. Together with our partners, the consortium
AGENT-3D is getting ready for lift-off in the coming years: Additive
manufacturing will be a key technology, providing companies with real
   competitive advantages.

Develop solutions and products by additive manufacturing.

  Solutions

Our mission – printing new worlds – acts as a guideline for
content-related tasks and projects while also describing the aim of
innovation through transformative technology. The organizational
groundwork has already been completed. Fundamental production processes
have been successfully realized for some years, while the requisite
systems and tools have been developed. Now AGENT-3D and its association
partners are working to refine products and processes for industrial
application. In the coming years we will break down technological barriers
at the same time as we combine technological goals with social issues. The
focus will always be on helping Germany assume a leading role in additive
manufacturing along the entire value chain.

   Good examples of additiv manufacturing

What has been achieved: Some good examples

The foundation stone has been laid. The anchor points are set. The first
main project of AGENT-3D was launched with the construction of the
Measuring and Testing Center for additive manufactured components.
Together with the association partners TU Dresden, Fraunhofer IWS, IPK and
IWU, this project saw the completion of a competence center to be used by
all consortium partners as well as interested industry and research
parties. New technologies, comprehensive software and a pool of expertise
provide a strong basis for solving technical challenges in the coming
   years within a secure environment.

        Association

Who we are.

   Association AGENT-3D

According to Prof. Christoph Leyens, the coordinator of the project named
“AGENT3D: Additive Manufacturing – Print new worlds”, the foundation of
AGENT-3D e.V. on February 24, 2015, was an important step to ensure the
optimal management and strategic orientation of this strong research
alliance. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research supports the
project within the research program “Zwanzig20 – partnership for
innovation” with funding of up to 45 million euros.

The association also coordinates so-called “basic” projects and technology
projects, administrative management and public relations. The focus is on
the acquisition and integration of new partners, with the association
serving as an important network platform.

At present the strategic alliance for research, innovation and growth in
additive manufacturing is made up of 110 industrial and research partners.
The chairman, Prof. Leyens, is supported by two deputies, Dr. Janny
Lindemann from GfE-FREMAT, Freiberg, and Mr. Martin Schäfer from Siemens
AG, Berlin. The association’s constitution foresees an extended Board of
Directors of up to 10 members, a majority of whom will be from industry.
This highlights AGENT-3D’s primary aim of fostering innovation for
   industrial applications.

Together we can achieve great results.

   AGENT3D-Roadmap - Foster innovation

The long-term objectives of AGENT-3D up to the year 2020 are:

     • Development of additive manufacturing into a key technology
     • Construction of a sustainable network structure
     • Measurable increase in export demand
     • Positioning of Germany as a leading provider of additive manufacturing

The implementation will be realized in two stages.

   AGENT3D ROADMAP INFOGRAFIK

  1. Strategy stage:

In the first section of the funding phase, the project consortiums will
develop their innovation strategies. To this end the consortium partners
will pinpoint their joint challenges, improve the partner structure and
formulate a roadmap showing in detail the various milestones, strategies
and planned development steps for the next years. An advisory board of
recognized experts will be appointed to accompany the consortium for the
entire funding period. The board will investigate the strategic
orientation and the project progress, and, furthermore, will decide on
whether the proposed projects are eligible for funding. One year after the
project start, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, together
with the advisory board, will evaluate the progress already made (this
evaluation to be repeated annually) and formulate recommendations.

  2. Implementation stage:

After the initial evaluation, the project consortiums will launch the
second stage of the funding phase. Here the focus will be on the
implementation of measures. In parallel, Zwanzig20 will demand the highest
possible degree of transparency and openness while providing funding.
Strategy and measures are to be constantly adapted to reflect technical
advances and market demands. The incorporation of new partners is
   explicitly desired.

        Challenge

Status Quo.

   Satus Quo

The great promise of additive manufacturing lies in its ability to provide
the reproducibility and reliability of current production processes while
accommodating customer specifications and designs which are adapted to the
desired application and not bound by available production methods.
Alongside consumer goods such as jewelry, art and decorative items,
competitive solutions already exist for some industrially-relevant product
classes. The entry threshold for product development and production has
been drastically reduced by additive manufacturing. Furthermore, the
process offers an extremely efficient and low-cost production of
components even for small batch sizes. This is a result of the short
production periods without huge costs for complex tool-making, storage and
transport. In summary: AGENT-3D intends to exploit the many opportunities
and still-to-be-discovered potentials of additive manufacturing. This
truly is a new industrial revolution!

        Herausforderung

Der Status Quo.

   Satus Quo

AGENT-3D is getting ready for lift-off in the coming years: Additive
manufacturing will be a key technology, providing companies with real
   competitive advantages.

   more

        Intentions

Foster innovations.

The primary objectives of AGENT-3D can be broken down into technological,
   market-based and social components.

   Here an overview:

   Elements

Our mission.

  Paradigm shift in production

Additive manufacturing brings the right material to the right place
without tooling and with high precision, flexibility, resource efficiency
and cost-effectiveness. AGENT-3D will pave the way for the industrial
implementation of additive manufacturing as an innovative production
   process.

  Functionally-adapted products

Multi-material systems with integrated intelligence will allow the
manufacture of products with radically new functions and characteristic
profiles. These will drive international demand and open up new markets.
AGENT-3D is developing highly integrated prototype products with entirely
   new combinations of functions.

  Individualized production

Tailor-made individual parts and large-batch series of products will be
developed and produced within (primarily) virtualized process chains.
Production is exclusively to demand and can be implemented on-site as well
as elsewhere. AGENT-3D can demonstrate the efficient, low-cost production
of small to large batches of products for various industries.

  Relocation of production

Additive manufacturing has the potential to become a key technology for
Germany, boosting inland production and limiting the relocation of value
added and jobs to other countries. Some value-added processes can even be
   brought back to this country.

Germany will become the lead provider for the complete spectrum of
additive manufacturing processes. Large enterprises and innovative SMEs
will set the development pace to apply this key technology to the whole
value chain. AGENT-3D will establish entire productive value chains in
   Germany.

  Window to the outside

Higher recognition and acceptance of additive manufacturing can be
developed by a close dialogue with society. Additive manufacturing brings
vital new impulses to education and training. High priority must be placed
on letting the public and professionals discover the great opportunities
presented by additive manufacturing. AGENT-3D fosters confidence in
industry and society through scientifically grounded developments and
best-practice examples. In this way we promote a climate for Innovation.

Synergies through transdisciplinary networking of skills

Through increased transdisciplinarity and networking, the open consortium
will explore new aspects of cooperation, creating space for innovation and
tapping into new application fields. The networking platform AGENT-3D
encourages transdisciplinary cooperation as a way to uncover entirely
novel areas of application and products.

  Ecological footprint

The environmental impact of materials and processes is already being
evaluated during the development of additive manufacturing processes. From
the outset AGENT-3D has promoted the sustainable development of additive
   manufacturing.

  Applications and markets

Additive manufacturing supports the creation of new business models,
helping to blur even further the distinction between digital and physical
production. Within the transformation of product development process by
additive manufacturing, socio-economic aspects will also be considered and
possible models for B2B and B2C collaborations developed. AGENT-3D
identifies current key applications and markets while anticipating future
ones. It also delivers solutions as a basis for the industrial
   implementation of additive manufacturing.

        Processes

Taking control.

   Powder bed processes

Selective laser sintering (SLS), selective laser melting (SLM), and
selective electron beam melting (SEBM) are the preferred procedures when
the fabrication of components requires highest geometric degrees of
freedom. The workspace of the machine limits the component size to
approximately 300 x 300 x 200 mm. The accuracy of the raw material,
depending on the process, is in the range of 100 µm and 1 mm. The typical
rates are between 2 and 100 cm3/h, depending on the particular procedure
and the material. The defect-free, processible range of materials includes
steels, nickel and cobalt alloys as well as Ti lightweight materials, hard
   metals, and ceramics.

   Frauenkirche

   Printing

The core of our work is the development of Additive Manufacturing
technologies based on inks and pastes. We consider the entire process
chain starting from the preparation of raw materials, substrate
pretreatment, aerosol and dispenser printing, drying, curing, laser and
plasma sintering and characterization of the final components. Materials
include metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites. Important applications
are flexible or conformal thermoelectric generators.

  Frauenkirche

   Generative laser powder buildup welding

Based on 3D-CAD data models, 3D structures are generated for the direct
fabrication, modification or repair of components. The component size is
unlimited in this procedure and the smallest lateral resolution is 30 µm.
Steels, nickel and cobalt alloys, titanium and aluminum lightweight
materials and carbide composites can be processed in a defect-free manner.
Currently IWS scientists focus their research into the development of
intermetallic titanium aluminides and Ni-based high temperature materials.

  Segel

   Generative laser wire buildup welding

Compared to laser powder buildup welding, laser wire buildup welding bears
significant advantages such as 100% material utilization, clean processes,
high surface quality and a low chemical reactivity due to smaller specific
   surfaces.

Thanks to the novel IWS COAXwire processing head, wires can now also be
processed independent from direction with high geometric degrees of
freedom. The smallest lateral resolution is currently 600 µm.

Practically, all commercial wire feeders can be processed. Typical
examples are tool and stainless steels, INCONEL625, INCONEL718, TiAl6V4,
AlMg5 as well as bronze and Zn-based model alloys.

   Process monitoring

Laser buildup welding combines accuracy, speed and reliability in order to
produce and use high-performance materials. A tailored temperature cycle
with an additional heat source are required to prevent the formation of
   cracks during the manufacturing process.

Such a tailored temperature regime is only possible if the applied
induction heating system is supplemented by an additional
process-monitoring device. A good example of this is the varying heat
distribution during laser movement when producing a turbine blade.

Heat accumulation causes an increased viscosity in the melt pool, thereby
inhibiting the layer-wise build up. Insufficient heat input may cause the
temperature to drop below the minimum required level.

Therefore, a basic challenge is to precisely regulate the temperature
through induction heating and the laser beam. Of course, the temperature
distribution will also depend on the component geometry and the
   surrounding atmosphere.

The consortium AGENT-3D has been able to develop such a temperature
monitoring and control system, called hybrid laser technology. This
permits a failure-free manufacture of crack-sensitive alloys with complex
   component geometry.

The temperature monitoring system uses a highly sensitive NIR-camera to
observe the metal surface during the process. The hybrid laser system can
be precisely regulated and is affordable, two facts that make it useful
for industrial applications and attractive to a wide variety of customers.

   Additional procedures

    Stereolitographie

Stereolithography is a rapid prototyping technology in which liquid
monomers are solidified by polymerization. The component is stacked from
bottom to top and light exposure is used to harden the polymer.

    Layer Laminate Manufacturing

The procedure is subtractive-additive rather than purely additive (which
is the easiest method to manufacture three-dimensional components).
Pre-manufactured films are cut out and joined to create a
three-dimensional model. As the layers have to be very thin and positioned
precisely, they are first built up layer-by-layer. Subsequently, lasers,
hot wires, blades and milling machines are used for contouring. The
process is particularly suited to the manufacture of massive components
   and large models.

    Fused Layer Modelling

In this process a solid layer is formed by extracting molten polymers.
Liquid materials and pastes are pressed through a jet and accurately
applied onto a substrate. Support structures are needed during the process
   and removed afterwards.

    Laser Chemical Vapor Deposition

Chemical cutting is called Laser Chemical Vapor Deposition. Unlike other
additive processes, it is used for coating and post-treatment of surfaces.
A laser is used to trigger a chemical reaction.

        Products

Brilliantly crafted.

A future car produced by additive manufacturing.

Industrial applications of additive manufacturing are extremely diverse,
ranging from the production of consumer goods, to automobiles, to medical
engineering applications and indeed to the aerospace industry. Additive
manufacturing enables the production of complex components and products
with the same characteristics as conventional manufactured parts but with
reduced material consumption and thus lower weight. For example, bionic
and weight-optimized structures can be generated with a maximum ratio of
mechanical resistance to weight. Moreover, this process allows structures
to be manufactured with integrated features such as adapted shock
absorption and improved heat transfer. Printing new worlds.

   3D in the aerospace industry

      3D in the aerospace industry

  Ready for take-off

The aerospace industry is a pioneer in the use of additive manufacturing.
Here geometrically complex and reliable high-tech components are produced
at drastically reduced production costs and weight. Furthermore, additive
manufacturing enables optimized value chains by reducing processing times
and environmental influences. Boeing has already installed tens of
thousands of laser-sintered polymer components in commercial and military
aircrafts. Additive manufacturing has an enormous value-added potential
for the aerospace industry in regard to improved planning and development,
component production, assembly and maintenance. For example, the
production of complex and movable component geometries allows for easy and
fast assembly. A further major area of application is in aircraft
maintenance. In addition to repairing damaged parts, stocks can be reduced
by the speedy on-demand manufacture of components.

   3D printing in medical science

      3D in medical science

  In the best of hands

Worldwide, more than 90% of polymer sleeves for inner-ear hearing aids are
produced by additive manufacturing. In excess of 90,000 titanium hip
sockets have been produced in Europe using EMB for use in the field of
orthopedic implants. These are impressive numbers. And yet this is just
the beginning. The entire field of medical engineering (implants and
prosthetics, dental industry) can benefit from additive manufacturing. For
example, data transfer from patient to digital production in laboratories
will be simplified and sources of error eliminated. Furthermore, the
process can be applied along the entire value chain of surgical devices.
Fresh markets in completely new dimensions will emerge through the
development of innovative materials and multi-material products.

3D Printing in the electronics industry

      3D in the electronics industry

  Perfect control

Additive manufacturing can be employed in the electronics industry for
application-specific development, for integration and testing as well as
for serial production and the supply of spare components. Additive
manufacturing can be used to adapt the production of electronic components
to specific development processes. In this way design processes become
faster as circuit boards can be directly produced from CAD data for
specific geometries and shapes. Moreover, the integration of various
electronic devices into one single product opens up unique new
   possibilities.

3D printing in the automotive industry

      3D in the automotive industry

  Picking up speed

Additive manufacturing processes can boost the value chain in the
automotive industry as well as improve mobility in general through
enhanced development, component testing, the production of vehicle parts,
fast assembly as well as the supply of spare parts. Additive manufacturing
can also assist in the evaluation and testing of different designs when
developing new vehicle models. The production of small test series of
functional components can be realized without complex tool production.
Also, production times for spare components can be significantly
   shortened.

   3D printing in tooling

      3D tooling

  Adjusting the screws

Additive manufacturing can serve the tooling sector by directly producing
some tools while making other tools redundant. Currently, applications of
additive manufactured components in mechanical engineering are limited to
   various grippers.

One growing market sector is the production of complete tooling systems.
For example, the combination of CNC-machines with additive manufacturing
systems is enabling the transition towards digital manufacturing.

auxetische bzw. lokal variierte Strukturen, Makrostrukturen einschließlich
bionischer oder Strukturen mit optimierter Topologie. mehr

  Technologievorhaben Hybrid+

erweitern. Beispielhaft dafür ist die additiv-generative Fertigung

Up and running

        Strategy project

AGENT-3D_Strategie II granted © Fraunhofer IWS Dresden

  Strategy project AGENT-3D_Strategie II

The overall goal of project AGENT-3D_Strategie II is to update the
scientific, technological, organizational and economic roadmap created
within the strategy project AGENT-3D_Strategie II. This ongoing strategy
development is based on the original visionary target fields and their
transformation into technologically feasible intermediate objectives. The
aim is for the project to prepare a decision-making basis for strategy
adaption. The extended board of directors (strategic council) will decide
on this foundation in consultation with the scientific advisory board.

        Innovation management project

   Innovation management project granted

  Innovation management project

The overall goal of project AGENT-3D_Management is to coordinate and
accompany the implementation of strategy undertaken by the innovative
association AGENT-3D. In addition, services are provided to our members.
The project is the follow-up to the first strategy phase, which was funded
until June of 2015, and continues these initial activities. The project is
closely linked to the AGENT-3D_Strategie II running in parallel, providing
information from the technology project (research and development project)
and the basic project to AGENT-3D-Strategie II in order to assist the
strategic preparation of decisions. AGENT-3D_Management supports
activities in the fields of research and development within the technology
and basic projects by sharing results, cross-links and interfaces. The
funded marketing of technological expertise will serve to disseminate
innovative R&D results to the public and experts. The project forms the
operational base of the overall project AGENT-3D. In addition to public
funding, consortium members are required to provide some own funding (as
   members of AGENT-3D e.V.).

        Technology projects

   AGENT-elF © Fraunhofer IWS Dresden

  Technology project AGENT-elF

The aim of AGENT-eIF (Additive Manufacturing Technologies for Integration
of Electronic Functionalities) is to realize the additive manufacturing of
three-dimensional components with integrated electrical and converter
functionalities of multi-material systems in one device or process. The
results are compounds of previously unprocessed (or hard to process)
materials in which sensory elements can be integrated depending on
requirements. The dispenser printing method is one such robust additive
manufacturing technology, which is flexible in use and supports the
integration of electric functionalities. Based on this technology, a
complete plant for the entire process chain can be developed. Preliminary
laboratory prototypes can be created for three chosen applications:
“printed electrical conduction paths”, “sensors and converter” and
   “thermos electrics”.

   FunGeoS © Fraunhofer IWU Dresden

  Techology project FunGeoS

The project “Functional geometry structures – construction principles for
Additive Manufacturing (FunGeoS)” aims at the development and industrial
implementation of additive manufactured functional structures for various
industrial applications. The geometrical structures should enable novel
functions such as extreme strength-to-weight-ratios with optimal flow of
forces, excellent heat transfer, filtration as well as integrated supply
and disposal of gaseous and fluid technical media, e.g. compressed air or
lubricant to the area of operation. The intention is for the FunGeoS
project to consider every imaginable and practical characteristic and type
of functional structure. For example, these can be: microstructures,
regular lattice/ framework structures, homogeneous, graded and auxetic or
locally non-uniform structures, macrostructures including bionic or
topologically optimized structures. Such structures with particularly high
industrial relevance should be investigated in more detail and practically
   demonstrated.

   FunGeoS

  Techology project multiBeAM

Currently the design of components is mainly determined by the options and
limitations of conventional shaping. Additive manufacturing, however,
enables the creation of component geometry that is impossible to achieve
using traditional production methods. This heralds a paradigm shift from
components that are shaped by manufacturing demands to those shaped by
functional needs. In addition to complex geometries, this gives
unprecedented opportunities to influence component characteristics through
the properties of locally applied materials. This constitutes an entirely
new approach: producing heterogeneous composite and integral components
through the tailored use of materials. Previously, multi-material
components have been produced through complex processes whereby separately
manufactured components are joined together or coatings are applied onto a
semi-finished product. The processes of joining and coating are highly
demanding, as both materials must be firmly connected without modifying
the underlying material properties. Frequently, the interface between two
discrete materials is a weak spot in future components due to the
disparate material characteristics. If, for example, component materials
have different coefficients of thermal expansion, then temperature
variations can lead to significant physical stresses, resulting in minor
defects or even, in the worst case, to component failure. These physical
stresses can be reduced or avoided by special geometrical elements
(geometric grading) or finely graduated variations in the material
   combination (material grading).

In addition, additive manufacturing presents an entirely new possibility
of combining totally different classes of materials in one single
component. Furthermore, a three-dimensional material gradient throughout
the entire component cross-section can be produced in only one procedure.
Compared to established composite constructions, a graded material
transition accrues layer- and point-wise. Previously intractable interface
problems such as the diverse thermal expansions of ceramics and metals can
be solved without complex connector elements. Such multi-material concepts
   (metal-metal, metal-ceramic, ceramic-ceramic/polymer) are indispensable
for high-tech sectors such as the aerospace, energy, optical and medical
engineering industries. All of these industries are represented by various
applications in multiBeAM, from individual surgical instruments and dental
implants to the next generation of high efficiency turbines or engines.

   IMPRoVe

  Technology project IMPRoVe

Based on the original objectives and the goals described in the roadmap
2.0 of AGENT-3D, IMPRoVe aims to minimize and eliminate cost and
production restrictions as well as promote a major expansion in the
industrial applications of additive manufacturing. The proposed solution
is hybrid machining, a combination of additive manufacturing with
conventional or additive manufactured semi-finished products. New pathways
will be revealed through representative industry prototypes, which will be
technologically and economically evaluated with respect to their
potentials and limitations. Based on the technogical importance of powder
bed processes and buildup welding in terms of additive manufacturing with
metals, the figure systematizes the solution area.

        Basic project

Measuring and testing center at Fraunhofer IWS © Fraunhofer IWS Dresden

  Measuring and testing center

The new measuring and testing center for Additive Manufacturing built in
collaboration with the University of Technology Dresden, Fraunhofer IWS,
IPK and IWU, guarantees continual growth in expertise in test and
measurement engineering for additive manufactured components throughout
the entire project lifetime of AGENT-3D. The requested tools will
complement the existing measuring and testing tools. All consortium
partners can make use of the innovative equipment and expertise. At the
same time, the diversity of research issues will establish a wide-ranging
fund of knowledge of inner and outer component characteristics. Even after
the end of project funding, a competence center for the measuring and
testing of additive manufactured products will have been set up for users
from industry and research. The construction of this center secures
permanent access to equipment and expertise. The described investments
serve as a basis for future collaborative projects to tackle technological
problems, which can then be solved together with all partners in secure
environments using appropriate test equipment and comprehensive software.
Clearly, dedicated software and test equipment are needed to achieve a
better understanding of the processes, data and materials. Based on these,
standard parameters will be determined for testing equipment and software
in order to develop the data stream and industrially applicable routines
for the various stages in the process chain (engineering, preparation,
production and quality test) in future technology projects.

  Project AGENT-3D_Basis

The basic project started in autumn 2015 is an important bridge between
the ongoing strategic project AGENT-3D_Strategie and the technology
projects. The detailed results of a stakeholder analysis gained in the
strategic process are used to define socio-political, economic, business,
technological and legal framework conditions and to reveal ways to
positively influence these factors. AGENT-3D_Basis generates important
basic findings with a focus on interdisciplinary application, to then be
employed in the subsequent collaborative project. The five topics of
   AGENT-3D_Basis are:

     • Impact of socio-economic factors on the development opportunities of
       additive manufacturing
     • Copyright / patent law, product liability, competition law
       requirements
     • New pathways of construction and design
     • Process reliability, materials and quality management
     • Interfaces and standardization

Fertigungsverfahren seit Jahren sicher beherrscht, ausgereifte

schlagkräftigen Forschungsallianz implementiert, so Prof. Christoph Leyens
Projektes "AGENT-3D: Additiv-Generative Fertigung – Neue Welten drucken."
koordiniert.

Komponenten betrachtet. Die aufzubringenden Materialien umfassen Metalle,
Polymere, Keramiken und Komposite. Ein Anwendungsgebiet sind z.B. flexible
   bzw. konturangepasste thermoelektrische Generatoren.

    Laser Chemical Vapor Deposition

        Materials

Intelligently combined.

   Additiv-generative Fertigung - Werkstoffe

The core field “materials” focuses on the development and characterization
of innovative materials, material combinations and technology-specific
material adaptations primarily in metal as well as ceramics, polymers,
composites and nanomaterials. The aim is to secure desired product
characteristics as well as the integration of additional functionalities
into components. In parallel, the characteristics of already used
materials can be improved, especially with regard to the reproducibility
of mechanical material characteristics, the aging process, electrical and
other specific properties. Material production must reflect the increased
usage of additive production processes and has to offer tailored material
   solutions.

Zukunftsfähige Werkstoffe für die generative Fertigung

  Multi-material concepts

In conventional forms of production, multi-material components can only be
manufactured by joining individual components. This means higher
production cost and system weight while usable lifetimes may be decreased.
Currently, many applications cannot be realized by conventional production
procedures as they require (for concept-related reasons) a multi-material
approach in an integrative component assembly.  Additive manufacturing
offers the new possibility of combining completely different classes of
materials in one single component or the option of three-dimensional
gradient areas throughout the entire component cross-section in one
seamless process. Multi-material concepts such as metal-metal,
metal-ceramic and ceramic-ceramic/polymer are currently needed in many
high-technology sectors such as the aerospace, energy, optical and medical
engineering industries. In the future they will be indispensible.

additiv-generative Fertigung ermöglicht Produkte mit erweiterten Funktionen

  Future-oriented materials for additive manufacturing

The potential of additive manufacturing in the area of metal and ceramic
materials has so far been tested in piecemeal fashion. This scope must be
significantly broadened. On the one hand, this applies to conventional
materials that cannot yet be used for additive manufacturing (e.g. special
steel and Al based alloys). On the other hand, it is also true of
materials whose potential for additive manufacturing has still to be
explored (e.g. very rough and/or hard materials that are difficult to
handle and process). In order to overcome these barriers, it is necessary
to generate reliable specifications for processes and materials, uncover
relations between materials, processes and product characteristics as well
as provide evidence of profitability (with regard to costs of raw material
and its efficient use). On thing is certain: this will enable a shift of
emphasis from high-tech applications such as in the aerospace and medical
engineering industries to wide-scale market penetration. The end result
   will be revolutionary product solutions.

Die additiv-generative Fertigung ermöglicht Werkstoffe mit Funktionen

  Functional materials

Additive manufacturing and the integration of intelligence into products
of all kinds are making the news as promising hot topics with huge
potential markets. The integration of special functions means equipping
components with additional specifications during the component
manufacturing process. For example, sensors, electrical components, EMC
shielding or data cables can be directly integrated into or onto the
structural material. The basis for the integration of functions is new
materials, designs and production procedures. Here answers and solutions
are waiting to be found. The advantages are crystal clear: The saving of
entire components and assembly steps in combination with reduced costs,
   material consumption and weight.
