                                   Photonics

After the invention of the laser in 1960, optics turned into photonics. In
today's telecommunication technology, photons have already become the main
carrier of information. During the last decades, a number of pioneering
developments have opened the door to a completely new class of materials.

The concepts of photonic crystals and metamaterials allow molding the flow
of light as well as controlling the dynamics of photons. These special
properties of such nanostructured materials are subject of current
   research activities.

Shown below is a series of structures fabricated by means of the direct
laser writing process achieved with Photonic Professional systems.

                         Positive Tone Resist Patterns

Two-photon "depolymerization" enables a flexible patterning of
positive-tone photoresists on a broad range of opaque and transparent
substrates. High-resolution 2D patterns with finest features can directly
be structured into the photoresist without the need of expensive masks.

This bridges the gap between electron beam lithography and direct laser
writing systems based on 1-photon absorption. The photoresist patterns can
then be transfered to the substrate by means of etching of material
   deposition and subsequent lift-off process.

By using galvanization processes it is also possible to use the 2D
structures as molds to shape metal parts.

                         Cell Scaffolds and Biomimetics

Shown below is a series of structures fabricated by means of the direct
laser writing technique with Photonic Professional systems in various
biocompatible materials and hydrogels. Typical topics of interest which
are under investigation are the study of cell migration or stem cell
differentiation. The 3D tailored environment acts as an artificial
extracellular matrix, i.e., a scaffold for the cells.

Another exemplified application is the fabrication of structures
demonstrating the bio-inspired phenomenon of dry adhesion, often referred
to as Gecko-Effect. Within this context of biomimetics, other studies like
that of the Lotus plant, Salvinia plant or shark skin are of interest and
can directly be fabricated with just one fabrication step by multi-photon
   lithography.

Customer Publication: Autonomously Powered Microrobots

   May 22,2017

Scanning electron micrograph of an array of low-drag microrobots with
   programmed catalytic engine sites

In a recent publication our customers from the Max Planck Institute for
Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart (Germany) use multiple printing steps
with different materials by two-photon crosslinking for 3D chemical
patterning. This strategy allows to locally design the chemical properties
of a printed object. As one application example, a self-propelled
   microrobot was created.

Advanced Micro-Optics: Additive Manufacturing Overcomes Design Constraints

    June 19, 2017

Photonic Professional GT sets benchmarks in microfabrication

   Nanoscribe_semisphere array close up.jpgEggenstein-Leopoldshafen The
German company Nanoscribe develops and produces high-precision 3D printing
solutions enabling research and industry to innovate by additive
manufacturing. Previously, the resolution and precision that is needed in
the fabrication of micro-optical components was not provided by
conventional additive manufacturing technologies. Using Nanoscribe's 3D
printer Photonic Professional GT, which is based on the technique of
two-photon-polymerization, a broad range of almost arbitrary micro-optical
shapes including standard refractive micro-optics, freeform optics,
diffractive optical elements or even multiplet lens systems can now be
printed in a one-step process. Hence, Nanoscribe's 3D printing solution
disrupts and breaks with previously complex workflows, overcomes
long-standing design limitations and enables unprecedented applications
   driven by advanced micro-optics.

  Additive Manufacturing of Micro-Optics

    January 19, 2017

Nanoscribe enables 3D printing of micro-optics

   Nanoscribe_PPGT.jpgEggenstein-Leopoldshafen   The German company
Nanoscribe is developing and producing high-precision 3D printing
solutions enabling the micro-optics industry to innovate by additive
manufacturing. Typically, the benefits of additive manufacturing are
considered to be fast and flexible design iterations as well as freedom of
design. But the usual 3D printing technologies available in the market
fail to meet the resolution and precision requirements of optical
   applications.

Mini Gift for HeKKSaGOn Conference at KIT

    October 5, 2016

   Nanoscribe_HekksagonPyramide_2016.jpgNanoscribe, a spin-off of the
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), has once again managed to make a
big impact with a tiny present: As part of the HeKKSaGOn conference, which
took place from September 29-30 in Karlsruhe, Japanese university
presidents were given a 3D-printed miniature replication of the Karlsruhe
landmark, a pyramid only 2 mm in height. For some special trickery, the
specialists for high-resolution 3D printing on the nano- and micrometer
scale, printed the logos of HeKKSaGOn, KIT, and Nanoscribe on the sides of
   the pyramid.

Additive Manufacturing of Lens Mounts for Micro-Optics

    March 1, 2016

   Nanoscribe_Lens_Mounts_2016.jpg

Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen   When assembling miniaturized optical systems,
it is often necessary to place micro-optical elements such as single
lenses or lens arrays above sensors or light-emitting devices at a
specific distance. Despite of the trend of miniaturization, most of
today's standard rapid prototyping technologies do not provide the high
resolution and minimum feature size that are necessary to fabricate
   micro-parts.

Could 3D Printed “Spermbots” Help Solve Male Infertility?

    February 8, 2016

Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen    German researchers from the Institute for
Integrative Nanosciences at IFW Dresden have developed micro-motors, which
can deliver poorly swimming sperms to the oocyte for fertilization. The
called “spermbots” were printed using Nanoscribe´s Photonic Professional
GT system. They consist of tiny metal helices, controlled by a rotating
magnetic field. The groundbreaking results have recently been published in
   ACS Journal Nano Letters.

November 19, 2015 PI2015_27 Click to download this press information

Micro-objects were produced by means of a Nanoscribe 3D printer at Hamlyn
  Centre, Imperial College London

                                           NanoscribeGreatWallOfChina-web.jpg

During his visit of the Hamlyn Centre at Imperial College London, the
Chinese president Xi Jinping was very fascinated by tiny objects produced
by means of a Nanoscribe 3D-printer.

The researchers showed the President three-dimensional objects
narrower than a human hair. He and the Duke of York, who was also visiting
the college, were presented with tiny gifts demonstrating the
outstanding capabilities the high-tech 3D printers. While Xi Jingping
could take home a section of the Chinese Great Wall on the micrometer
scale, Prince Andrew got a panda leaping over a bamboo that was printed to
the tip of a needle. “The height of the panda is approximately 50
micrometers, or half the width of a human hair”, explained Maura Power, a
PhD student supervised by Professor Yang at Hamlyn Centre.

                                    Software

Nanoscribe provides an in-house developed software package that embeds the
Photonic Professional GT systems along a 3D printing workflow. The package
consists of the print-job preparation tool DeScribe and the graphical user
interface NanoWrite for controlling the lithography systems. An intuitive
user interface together with software compatibility to the CAD data format
STL guarantees an easy handling. Image files can be imported for 2.5D
relief structures as an alternative to grayscale lithography. Autofocus,
substrate positioning, PerfectShape®, and exposure dose are controlled by
NanoWrite for a complete automation of the writing process.

The typical workflow for 3D micro-printing using the Photonic Professional
   GT.

DeScribe

DeScribe is a powerful tool for generating print jobs in Nanoscribe's
proprietary General Writing Language (GWL). Embedded along the 3D printing
workflow, it enables the import of 3D mesh files in STL format. An
automatic mesh-fixing routine removes common errors of the STL input
files. Slicing as well as hatching of the 3D design is handled by
DeScribe. GWL scripts can also be programmed manually using DeScribe to
allow for a full control over the laser focus movement as well as other
aspects of the writing process. The built-in fast 3D rendering engine
provides an interactive preview of the object and its 3D print settings.

  Key Features

     • STL import with a sophisticated mesh-fixing routinethumb_describe.jpg
     • Slicing and hatching routines for 3D meshes
     • Automatic splitting of large STL files
     • Import of image files for 2.5D relief structures (compare Software
       Update: DeScribe 2.2)
     • Editor for GWL files
     • Interactive 3D preview with voxel visualization

NanoWrite

NanoWrite is the easy-to-use graphical user interface for
controlling Photonic Professional 3D laser lithography systems. The latest
release NanoWrite 1.7 includes more than 100 commands that allow access to
all relevant parameters, giving total control of operation while keeping
the language simple. NanoWrite requires as input a file defining the
structural design in Nanoscribe’s proprietary General Writing Language
(GWL). A more detailed description of NanoWrite can be found in our
   newsletter article.

  Key Features:

     • User-friendly interface for operating Photonic Professional

                                   Technology

   IFrame
Nanoscribe's technology for the fabrication of three-dimensional micro-
and nanostructures in photo-sensitive materials is based on "direct laser
   writing", i.e., a non-linear two-photon absorption process. Many resins
that polymerize when exposed to UV-light can undergo similar chemical
reactions when two photons of near-infrared light are absorbed
simultaneously. A necessary condition for this effect to occur is a
sufficiently high light intensity that is provided by an ultrashort pulse
laser. Typically, the laser is focused into the resin and the two-photon
polymerization (TPP) is triggered only in the focal spot volume. As 3D
analogon to a pixel, the volume counterpart is called voxel.

Additive Manufacturing on the Micro-Scale

The effect of two-photon induced photopolymerization was first reported in
1965 by Pao and Rentzepis* and since then has become a valuable tool for
micro fabrication. It enables the manufacturing of micro- and meso-scaled
parts with a high shape- and functional-complexity in various positive
   tone photoresists. Read More »

Maskless Lithography

Multiphoton lithography allows also subtractive manufacturing of positive
tone resists. Nonlinear light absorption triggers a local
"depolymerization" of the material that can be easily washed away in a
   developer. Read More »

   ══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

It all Starts with Polymers...

... but does not have to end there. For many fields of application in
science and industry, the choice of polymer as a printing medium is
already sufficient. But some applications demand materials that can not
directly be processed by two-photon polymerization. In those case, there
are several inversion and casting techniques that allow the replication of
3D structures in metals, silicon, silica or PDMS.
The versatility of the patterning technology makes it a useful tool for
scientific and industrial applications. By colaborating with industrial
partners within the context of funded projects, Nanoscribe matches the
technology to the demands of industry. Read More »

                             Additive Manufacturing

meso-scala_web.jpgFrom the micro- to the meso-scale: These lattice cubes
were all printed using the Photonic Professional GT to demonstrate the
versatility of the micro production process for different scales.

The micro production process enables high-resolution structuring of
arbitrary 3D patterns in photosensitive materials. Along the list of
compatible materials that were tested by Nanoscribe are SU-8, Ormocomp®,
and Nanoscribe's proprietary IP resists. Its resolution, i.e., the voxel
size, is mainly determined by the laser spot size in the material, the
power of the laser source and the properties of the photosensitive
material itself. By using focusing optics with a high numerical aperture,
very small voxels with sub-micrometer dimensions can be achieved. To move
the voxel relative to the sample, two technical implementations can be
distinguished. In the fixed-beam moving-sample (FBMS) approach the
substrate is moved in all three dimensions by a high-precision positioning
unit relative to the focussing optics. This movement is often driven by
piezo actuators that allow for a very precise focus trajectory. In the
second implementation, the laser beam is laterally scanned by
galvanometric mirrors and the vertical movement is controlled by
piezo-actuators. This moving-beam fixed-sample (MBFS) approach allows for
much faster fabrication speeds by employing a layer-by-layer build
process. This process is called additive manufacturing.

                              Maskless Lithography

   nano-micro-masklessLithography_web.jpgSEM micrographs of various 2D
patterns in positive and negative tone photoresists fabricated with a
   Photonic Professional GT.

Multiphoton patterning processes also allow subtractive manufacturing of
positive-tone resists. Here, the nonlinear light absorption triggers a
local "depolymerization" of the material that can be easily washed away in
a developer bath in post processing. This enables a high-resolution
lithography of thin-film resists on a broad range of transparent (e.g.
glass) as well as opaque (e.g. silicon) substrates without the need of
photomasks. Along the list of compatible positive-tone photoresists are
   AZ® MIR 701, AZ® 5214, AZ® 9260, and AZ® 40XT. Surface patterning of
photopolymers can also be achieved by using negative-tone photoresists
like SU-8 or Nanoscribe's IP resins. For the latter, these photoresists
enable a very robust and reliable process as the local light-triggered
polymerization results in a cross-linking of polymer chains. Pre- and
post-processing parameters therefore have marginal influence on the
   polymerization result.

                             Materials & Processes

A wide range of materials has been validated successfully for direct laser
writing with different optical, mechanical, electronic and
chemical/biological properties. Along the list of compatible resins are
standard photopolymers as used in semiconductor industry. Biocompatible
materials and hydrogels can also be used for 3D structuring. Nanoscribe
also develops own resists to provide the printers' maximum performance
with respect to resolution or writing speed to the user. Polymer
structures can be printed on a large range of substrates with different
chemical and physical properties. The choice of the right substrate
material depends on the type of application. For use in optical
applications, often a transparent substrate material like glass is used.
Here, the substrate is solely providing a support to the polymer
structures. Pre-structured substrates like opaque IC-wafers or transparent
micro-fluidic chips can also be used to print polymer structures upon. In
that way, multiphoton lithography provides an elegant way to combine the
substrate with optical or mechanical parts thereby enhancing its
   functionality.

More Materials

Despite numerous two-photon polymerization compatible photopolymers, there
remain many classes of non-polymerizable materials which cannot directly
be fabricated as 3D micro- and nanostructures in a one-step-procedure. To
meet application demands, casting techniques can be applied – even for
   complex 3D micro- and nanostructures!

     • Casting in PDMS
The fabrication of large-area structures is often a time-consuming
task. However, you can considerably reduce the process time by writing
a master and replicate it to different materials by stamping
       techniques.

     • Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD)
       Through silicon-single-inversion (SSI) and silicon-double-inversion
(SDI), polymer based network-like 3D structures can be casted into
silicon. Exemplified are woodpile photonic crystals and a photonic
quasicrystals. The principle has also been proven to work with
       butterfly wings.

     • Galvanization
Metallic structures can be realized via a galvanization process of the
3D polymer structures that serve as a templates. The metal, e.g.,
gold, nickel or copper, is electrochemically deposited in a
       galvanization bath.

     • Electroless plating
Polymer structures can also be deposited with thin nickel layers by
means of electroless nickel plating. This allows the coating of porous
structures without the need of electric conductive seed layers.

     • Melt infiltration and patterning of chalcogenide glasses
Semi-conducting chalcogenide glasses can be infiltrated in 3D
templates and can even be structured in 3D using direct laser writing.

                           Mechanical Microstructures

In the past few years mechanical properties of three-dimensional
micro-structured materials have received increasing attention triggered by
the demands and tremendous potential applications of artificial
designer-materials. New advanced fabrication techniques as well as
characterization and simulation tools are the key players of this
   successful development.

One of these hot topics is that of so-called mechanical metamaterials. The
analogy to transformation optics provides the mathematical background for
the simulation of this new class of materials.
Another research focus is the fabrication and study of ultralight
materials. The Photonic Professional direct laser writing system can
provide the base for the fabrication of controlled 3D micro-trusses.

                                  Micro-Optics

Multi-photon polymerization by means of Nanoscribe’s direct laser writing
systems allows for the fabrication of complex and replicable 2.5D
structures. Polymer micro-optics can be used as moulds for replication or
masters for pattern transfer. The key advantage compared to 2.5D gray
scale lithography or 2D UV-exposure and subsequent reflow techniques is
clear: arbitrary complex shapes can be fabricated in one single step.
These can be refractive optics such as arrays of aspheres, diffractive
optics such as Fresnel lenses or even stacked micro-lenses.

In addition, negative-tone resists may be used which are less sensitive to
the development process compared to positive-tone resists - thus allowing
for high reproducibility of the complete process chain. Furthermore,
micro-optics of up to several 100 µm height can be fabricated with optimal
resolution. A sub-category of 2.5D structures are freeform surfaces. Here,
arbitrarily complex surfaces can be written by two-photon polymerization -
including closed surfaces with undercuts, micro-optics of complex shape
   and calibration samples.

                            Micro Rapid Prototyping

The technology of two-photon polymerization of Nanoscribe’s microscale 3D
printing systems enables the rapid prototyping of micro- and
   nanostructures.

Shown below is a series of images which reveal the extraordinary high
quality and resolution achievable by additive manufacturing – mostly
employing liquid photoresists – by means of Photonic Professional laser
   lithography systems.

In contrast to stereolithography (SLA), the resolution is between 1 and 2
orders of magnitude higher: Feature sizes in the order of 1 µm and less
   are standard.

                                 Microfluidics

In various fields of application like biotechnology, medicine, diagnostics
and nano-optics, operators are aiming at the integration of sub-micron
scaled three-dimensional elements into microfluidic channels.

By using Nanoscribe's 3D laser lithography system Photonic Professional
off-the-shelf purchased chips can be combined with the remarkable 3D
structuring capabilities of Direct Laser Writing.

It thus is now possible to, e.g., create filtration systems, stirrers,
microfluidic mixer / valves or optical elements for lab-on-a-chip systems.

                               Photonic Surfaces

2D photonic applications benefit from the high resolution enabled by the
two-photon polymerization of Nanoscribe’s laser lithography systems.
Depending on the photochemistry of resists used and the focusing optics
minimum feature sizes of about 150 nm can be achieved.

This bridges the gap between electron beam lithography and direct laser
writing systems based on 1-photon absorption. Examples of applications
   include - among others -

diffractive optical elements (DOEs) and gratings, metamaterials, optical
security labels, optical waveguides as well as biomimetics.

                             Optical Interconnects

   Short-distance optical interconnects enable high-performance
optoelectronic systems. High-resolution additive manufacturing based on
two-photon polymerization provides the flexibility for chip-to-chip or
even on-chip optical communication using three-dimensional polymer
   waveguides.

Phoibos, the government-funded project (BMBF) aims for further developing
the technology for photonic wirebonding of optical multi-chip systems.
Nanoscribe contributes to Phoibos with its process and integration
experience in the field of 3D intergrated photonics. It supplies a
photonic wirebonder for automated high-speed fabrication of 3D optical
   interconnects and wirebonds.

In addition, the wirebond material is also produced by Nanoscribe to
complete the process chain. For further information on the project or
technology, please refer to the Phoibos website or scroll down to the
   reference list.

For further information on the project or
technology, please refer to the Phoibos website or scroll down to the
   reference list.

verwandeln.
